Poticas • Butter Rings • Kieffels
Potica is a traditional Slovenian pastry that dates back to at least the 16th century. Its name comes from the Slovenian verb poviti, meaning “to wrap” or “to envelop”—a perfect description of this delicious rolled pastry. Potica is often filled with sweet or savory ingredients like walnuts, tarragon, or poppy seeds.
So how did potica become a beloved tradition at the St. Peter bake sale?
Long-time parishioner Ann Brown brought her family’s potica recipe with her when she immigrated to the United States. She has been leading the potica baking effort at St. Peter for several decades. Her dedication—and her incredible baking—have made potica a favorite treat, with community members lining up to get their hands on a loaf!
In fact, demand has grown so much that we now offer pre-order forms to help ensure everyone gets a taste of this cherished tradition.
