Founded on the Feast of Our Lady of the Snows, August 5, 1949, a significant milestone in our parish's history took place. Our original parish site was located at the corner of Newman, Grace, and Wayne Streets. The old Newman School building was purchased for $35,000, becoming the heart of our new parish.
From that point forward, all Catholics living north and east of the Pennsylvania Railroad were welcomed as members of the newly established St. Mary’s Parish.
The newly purchased Newman School building was thoughtfully adapted for parish use:
The lower level of the building was transformed into the church
One side of the building became St. Mary School
Above the church was the parish hall
The third floor was prepared as living quarters for the Sisters
By the fall of the following year, ten classrooms were ready. The first Masses in the completed church were celebrated on Easter Sunday, April 9, 1950.
To staff the school, the parish welcomed the Sisters of Mercy, who began teaching the children of St. Mary School. The school officially opened on September 18, 1950, with an initial enrollment of 14 students.
Thanks to the hard work and generosity of parishioners—especially the Justine Sterkel and Scholl families—St. Mary’s was well furnished, supplied, and spiritually thriving from the very beginning.
Eight years later, on August 5, 1969—exactly 20 years after the formation of the parish—the new St. Mary School opened its doors. The project cost $641,424.00 and marked a major milestone in the parish’s growth.
Masses continued at the Newman Street site until November 1, 1971, when the original property was sold at auction for $25,000. Today, a park and playground stand where the original church and school once served the faithful, marking the site where St. Mary’s Parish first came to life.
Just over a year later, on June 20, 1982, the beautiful new 400-seat church was formally dedicated, marking a new chapter in the spiritual life of the St. Mary’s community.
That same year, St. Mary’s welcomed its first lay principal, ushering in a new era of leadership and growth in our school ministry.
